A report published by the American Pet Producers Association (APPA) estimated that 78 million dogs are owned in the United States. Approximately 44% of all households in the United States have a dog. Approximately 6.3 million companion animals enter U.S. animal shelters nationwide every year. Of those, approximately 3.1 million are dogs.
Senior dogs (7+ years of age) have a more challenging course to adoption due to health and mobility issues. Aging dogs tend to need more care and attention and are not as easily transitioned into a new home, especially those with children or those with lack of time.
